Our Story

Welcome!

To Ragatip - Love Music

As lifelong enthusiasts of Indian classical and folk music, our mission is to build a community that values and understands these magnificent art forms, along with the diverse human stories behind them.

We have blogs and bite-sized articles covering everything from devotional dance and tabla mythology to modern Sufi fusions and South Indian protest music. We aim to shed light on the lives, routines, and beliefs behind the sounds, fostering new perspectives on issues such as past inequalities, current discrimination, and how the spirituality of the creative process might evolve in the future.

There are countless hidden histories to uncover, such as how Bengal had its own thriving jazz scene in the 1920s, or what sparked the rise of Indo-Swahili pop music in today’s Kenya (or why a teenage Zakir Hussain ended up living on the Grateful Dead’s psychedelic ranch for a summer). We feature some of South Asia’s most fascinating musical innovators, ranging from stubborn global superstars to forest-dwelling tabla masters of bygone eras, alongside interviews, instrument primers, and more.

Raj Mistry

Raj grew up learning tabla from Pandit Sharda Sahai and playing percussion for a variety of bands from his early teens. After spending a 1 year stint in Mumbai training under Pandit Bhawani Shankar he returned to London determined to chart a new musical path.

Over the last 17 years he has worked on a range of initiatives to broaden awareness of Indian music in the UK – including building the Darbar Player – a Netflix experience for lovers of Indian Classical music.

His passion is to become an equalizer in the world of Indian music – providing opportunity to those that aspire to reach the tallest heights in the industry.

Jagdeep Shah

Jagdeep Shah’s passion for Indian music began with his grandfather, a bhajan singer and tabla player, and was nurtured after his family migrated from Uganda to the UK in the 1970s.

His father, Kanti Shah, a respected connoisseur of classical, Sufi, and ghazal music, hosted regular baithaks that deepened Jagdeep’s appreciation of the art form.

Alongside his career as a photographer and businessman, Jagdeep has volunteered extensively with Navras Records, Sama Arts, Asian Music Circuit, and the Darbar Festival. His lifelong mission is to share and promote Indian music, inspiring younger generations to connect with their cultural heritage.
